Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), also known as sexually transmitted diseases, are extremely common. They are passed from one person to another through sexual activity.
The most common STDs in Northern Ireland.
The most common STIs/STDs in Northern Ireland are chlamydia and gonorrhoea. Others include genital warts, human papillomavirus (HPV), syphilis, and HIV. Many of these STDs do not show symptoms in your body for a long time. However, you can still pass them on to other people.
How likely is it that I have contracted an STD?
Even if you have been sexually active with one person, you may still have contracted an STD. Unfortunately, young women’s bodies are biologically prone to contracting STDs. Your risk is greater again if you have had several sexual encounters.
What if I have been using contraception, am I at risk?
Barrier methods do not provide guaranteed full protection against STDs. Genital warts and HPV are spread through genital skin-to-skin contact. Other contraceptives, such as the pill, the coil, or other intra-uterine devices, do not provide any protection.
It is important that you treat these infections early since some STDs can lead to problems such as infertility. Other STDs cannot be cured, but they can be treated to manage the condition.
