Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I am pregnant?
If you have recently had unprotected sex or some sort of birth control failure, there is a possibility that you could be pregnant.
The best way to find out for sure is to take a pregnancy test and follow it up with a limited ultrasound scan. We offer both, free of charge, in our centre. Even before taking a test, however, you can look for early signs of pregnancy which include:
- nausea
- fatigue
- a missed period
- swollen breasts
- frequent urination
- certain food aversions or cravings
- cramping or spotting
If you notice any of these symptoms, you might be pregnant. We recommend contacting us to schedule an appointment for a free pregnancy test.
How much will my appointment cost?
We offer each of our services at no cost to you. Advocate Women’s Centre is dedicated to ensuring every woman has access to safe reproductive health services, and that she is aware of all the options available to her.
Can I bring someone with me to my appointment?
You are welcome to bring a guest (18 years and over) to your appointment. However, to protect the safety of our staff, if the person accompanying you is unwell or has a cough/flu-like symptoms, they should not attend the appointment.
What if I don’t know my next steps?
That’s okay. It is completely normal for a woman experiencing an unexpected pregnancy to question her next steps. Fortunately, we are experienced in helping women in your position.
We are equipped with the latest information and most trustworthy services to help you navigate the next steps in your journey. We can advise you about your options, and help you feel empowered to make the best decision for yourself.
Do you offer free pregnancy testing?
Yes, like all of our services, our pregnancy testing is completely free and confidential.
How soon can I take a pregnancy test after my missed period?
It’s best to wait at least one week after your missed period for the most accurate pregnancy test results. Pregnancy tests look for hCG – the “pregnancy hormone” – to determine if you are pregnant or not. In the early stages of pregnancy, your hCG levels double every 48 to 72 hours, so you’ll receive the most accurate results after at least a week.
Do I really need an ultrasound scan?
If you have a positive pregnancy test result, the next step is to have an ultrasound scan (should you meet certain criteria). A limited ultrasound will confirm the pregnancy and let you know how many weeks you’ve been pregnant. This crucial information serves as a guide to help you as you consider your pregnancy options.
Is abortion legal?
Yes. Abortion is legal in Northern Ireland and in the Republic of Ireland.
